Civil War relic desk sets are interesting examples of the desire to combine the historic with the esthetic and the useful. This one has a miniature wood mortar next to a glass inkwell, with two of three upright tubes next to it to hold pens, and portions of the nose of a 3-Inch Hotchkiss shell and fuse adapter. This retains a 1916 dated string tag reading, “Ring and Top of 10pd Parrott shell, / rusty. History unknown Diameter 2-1/4 / in. Weight ¾ pound. In Two pieces. / Given to Roch Municipal museum / by / Col. H.S. Redman – Court House, City. Mar 10 1916.” Someone tried to blot out the three lines recording the donation, but they are still very legible. The bottom right of the tag has a 1996 date followed by a number, likely a later inventory number, added before its de-accession. The base measures 6 ½” in diameter; overall approx. 4 ½” tall at highest point.

Colonel Henry S. Redman (1844-1920) was Superintendent of the Monroe County Court House in Rochester, NY, for some 29 years, explaining his address on the tag and identifying the location of the museum. He had served briefly in the 108th NY, in 1862, being quickly discharged as a minor, but reenlisted in December 1863 in the 21st NY Cavalry, during which service he was wounded, captured, and escaped, transferring to the VRC in January 1865 and being discharged in July 1865. He was very active in the G.A.R. His rank as Colonel derives from postwar NYNG service. We show an obituary in this listing.

The set has a nicely turned, stepped round base and the tag is attached by string. The tag mistakenly identifies the shell fragment as a Parrott round, where it is actually the nose of 3” Hotchkiss shell with fuze adapter, but that is of little importance. This is a nice example of a relic desk set with a clear connection to the Rochester area and a veteran with some very active service- his obituary credits him with participation in 27 engagements. Historical societies and small, local museums have long deaccessioned material deemed unimportant or simply to make room. This fortunately preserves some its history on the tag and would make a great addition to a collection of veteran memorabilia.   [sr][ph:L]
