Gavels made from wood cut from historic spots were popular post-Civil War mementos. This measures about 6-1/2” long and has a head turned with three wide, raised rings at the center flanked by a narrower ring toward either end. The remnant of a wrist strap is knotted around the handle, which has an old label glued to it reading in old brown ink: “1st White House [o]f Confederacy.”

Although the “White House of the Confederacy” in Richmond is better known, Montgomery, AL, is the site of the first executive mansion of the Confederacy, a private home built in the 1830s leased by the Provisional Confederate Congress in February 1861 for use by President Jefferson Davis and his family, who occupied it until late May, after the beginning of the war, when the Confederate government moved to Richmond.

The house still stands, though not at its original location. The Confederate government sold their lease on the structure when they moved to Richmond and it subsequently passed through several hands. The UDC made some effort at its preservation and a “White House Association” was established in 1900, but it was not until the 1920s that it was finally moved, the owner refusing to sell the land itself, and restored.

Gavels made from wood cut from historic spots to some degree fulfilled the goal of combining the historic and sentimental with the practical and in the context of veterans’ or fraternal groups would add a touch of authority, order and decorum. In this case there was certainly some governmental and legislative association, with many former Confederates picturing the Confederacy as a vanished nation. This is a rather unique example.   [sr][ph:L]
