This is the classic Confederate cap box, constructed of black leather with a rectangular outer flap that due to age and post-battle exposure is shrunken some to 2 1/2 inches by 3 1/2 inches across. It has a scalloped lower edge, again distorted some from exposure to ground dampness, and had a separate sewn latch tab. It has the ubiquitous purely Confederate lead finial. It has a typically Southern single 1 1/8-inch-wide belt loop on the reverse; this is hand stitched along the top and bottom edge. The short inner flap with its 2 side ears is in place. The interior has the piece of sheepskin whose fleece, now missing, served to keep the caps inside when the flap was unlatched. The leather surface is excellent considering it is a (not long after the battle) pick-up. The latch tab is missing.  All stitching is tight.

A 19th century inked tag, now separate from the pouch, that measures 3 inches by 1 3/4 inches reads: "Soldier's Cap Box Picked up on Battle Field of Antietam or Sharpsburg." This one which we originally sold over 12 years ago is historic and highly collectible.   [pe][ph:L]
