Offered is a rare partisan spontoon - a hybrid European polearm combining features of a wide-bladed partisan and an officer’s spontoon, used primarily from the 16th through the 18th centuries as both a badge of rank and a close-combat weapon.  Unlike other styles, this is sharpened at both sides of the flared blade base.

This example is hand-forged and almost certainly of Continental European origin, likely German, and given the style, dates from the mid 1500’s. The head retains part of the original pole, originally attached by pins at twin pairs of mounting holes on either side of the socket.  Surface shows very light pitting and minimal rust.  Edge remains quite sharp for the age of the piece with only one small nick noted near one side of the flared base. Dimensions are 5.1” x 21.8”.
