This lot of lead projectiles includes five musket/rifle balls. The largest one being for the Brown Bess, two for the Charleville musket, and the two small balls that could have been for rifles or pistols. A good pile of buckshot is also included. All recovered by author/publisher Dean Thomas (with Wendell Lang).

During the American Revolutionary War, Nelson’s Point (located in present-day Garrison, New York) was a strategic military outpost and encampment on the east side of the Hudson River. It sat directly opposite West Point (specifically Fort Arnold, later renamed Fort Clinton) and served as a crucial node in the defense of the Hudson Highlands. General George Washington ordered the construction of two major fortifications—North Redoubt and South Redoubt—on the high elevations just southeast of Nelson's Point to prevent the British from marching up the eastern roads and laying siege to the West Point complex. The primary land route leading to the West Point network ran directly along the left (east) bank of the Hudson River, passing the infamous Beverly Robinson House and running right through the Nelson's Point area. Because of its defensible position, it was repeatedly used as a staging ground and seasonal quarters for various Continental forces. The 6th Connecticut Regiment encamped at Nelson's Point in the spring and summer of 1779 before moving south, and Colonel Moses Hazen’s 2nd Canadian Regiment used the point as its official headquarters in the fall of 1780.

These are from Dean’s collection, with his hand-written note inside the case.  [jet][ph:L]
