Hundley, Ransom N.  2022. Softcover, 258 pages.  8" X10".

The American Civil War began on April 12, 1861, when South Carolina Militia bombarded Fort Sumpter with artillery. Just seven days later, violence erupted in the streets of Baltimore, Maryland when President Abraham Lincoln called for 75,000 volunteers to put down “the rebellion.”

Panicked soldiers of the 6th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry fired into an angry mob that was pelting them with rocks and bricks. The confrontation came to be known as the Pratt Street Riots, in which nine civilians and three soldiers were killed.

Federal warrants were issued for the arrests of the most violent of participants, prompting some to flee to Richmond, Virginia to fight for the Confederacy. As a result of the unexpected workforce, several Baltimoreans joined the Provost Corps, with a number being granted Confederate Detective status.

This previously unpublished account of the Confederate Detective Service defines its role in affecting the outcome of the war. In addition to accounts of heroism and bravery, be prepared for the treachery and deceit of desperate men placed in harm’s way.     [LD] [PH:L]
