This is a fine example of a pre-Civil War era men’s natural linen shirt dating to the 1840s through the 1850s. It fits the classic silhouette and construction of a men’s dress shirt of the period with its straight cut pattern, its four-button front, and fold over collar. These shirts were a staple in the Victorian era, and this one in particular would have been owned by someone upper middle class since it is made of high-quality linen. Although these shirts were considered undergarments, they’re also the dress shirt of the era, typically worn with the button placket showing underneath a vest or jacket.
The shirt itself is made of two symmetrical pieces, measuring 35.5 inches in length and 27.5 inches in width, to form the front and back. It is attached together by two reinforcing rectangles of fabric to form the shoulders. The neck collar measures 14.5 inches. The sleeves are two-piece with a 5-inch gusset. The cuffs are plain and lack any frill or trim. The shirt is completed by small white milk glass buttons. The buttonholes, as well as the rest of the garment, is machine sewn.
This example is in excellent condition with minor wear. There are very few minor marks throughout, such as small pin drop sized brown or rust colored stains. There are minor scuffs on the front of the shirt near the base of the button placket.
All buttons are present, and are strong and securely attached. The seams are strong and secure as well.
The reverse of the shirt shows a faint stain straight across the back at about 22 inches down. There is a stray faint red mark on the bottom of the shirt as well.
Overall, this shirt is crisp and likely in near unworn condition. There is very minimal wear and tear to the shirt and the fabric is strong. [cls] [ph::L]
