The 35-star US became official on July 4, 1863, with the admission of West Virginia to the Union and was official until July 4, 1865, when a 36th star was added for Nevada. This one is constructed of red, white and blue bunting, machine sewn, measuring 63 by 114 inches overall, including the 2-3/8 canvas hoist. The blue canton is 35 inches tall, by 45 inches, and rests on the 8th, white, stripe, and bears separately applied white silk five-pointed stars on each side in five rows of seven each, measuring about 4-1/2 inches point to point. The condition is excellent overall with just a few small moth holes to the bunting and just four stars on the reverse showing some small pencil point or pencil eraser size holes from wear showing the blue fabric underneath. The fly edge is hemmed and in very good condition. The hoist has three brass grommets. The obverse (canton at upper left) has a small museum inventory number in black ink next to the upper grommet: N.3.5.42. On the reverse, below the upper grommet is a large black stenciled maker’s mark: C.M. GIBBS. / MANUF’R / SYRACUSE. N.Y. A little further down the hoist in modern black ink is handwritten “1863 6X9 35 WVA.”

Although the official date of adoption and use is July 4, 1863, flag makers would certainly have begun making them earlier, as soon as it seemed clear a new state would join the union. In this case the Wheeling Convention had pushed for statehood in 1861, but it was not until 1862 that the state legislature approved formation of a new state and Lincoln approved an enabling act at the end of the year. A new state constitution was approved on March 26, 1863, and on April 20, 1863, Lincoln admitted the state at the end of sixty days, i.e. June 20, 1863, so Spring 1863 seems a likely point at which they may have first showed up. At the other end of its period of use, Nevada was officially admitted on October 31, 1864, and flag makers likely shifted gear at that point to prepare.

This displays very well and would make a great backdrop for a mid-war display.   [sr][ph:L]
