UNIDENTIFIED RED ZOUAVE FEZ

$1,850.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 33-142

Fez is constructed out of one piece of red felt and meas. approx. 8.00 inches high x 7.50 inches wide across the bottom.

The body of the fez is in rough condition with multiple moth nips and holes. At one time the fez was stored flat creating two fold creases. The moth damage seems to be on one side and along one of the folds. The damage to the side covers an area approx. 4.50 inches wide and running the whole length of the piece from top to bottom. In this area the heaviest moth action is near the base where a good portion of the felt is missing. The other affected area along the fold line is on the opposite side of the fez from the damage just described. There are several small holes in this area and numerous bites and tracking. The rest of the fez has light to moderate nips and tracking with a hole approx. 1.50 inches wide x 1.00 inch tall just above the edge.

Attached to the top of the fez is a knot of dark blue cotton threads forming a plume. Threads have retained their dark blue color and are approx. 9.50 inches long. The bottom of the fez is bound in what was once blue thread that has now turned brown. This binding is in fairly good condition except where the above described moth action touches it. Small amounts of the binding is missing.

There is no lining or sweatband on the interior and never seems to have had one. Partially legible maker mark printed inside: "G C[?]______ / New York."

Any uniform item relating to Zouaves is rare and despite this one not being in perfect condition it is whole.  [ad]
