Japanned tin is pyramidal in shape and is meant for storing the plumed helmet worn by officers and enlisted men from 1872 through the 1890’s.

The tin meas. approx. 10.75 inches across the bottom by 14.00 inches high. The bottom portion is oval in shape while the lid rises to a tapered point with a carrying handle affixed at top.

Exterior is free of dents but does show light to moderate wear and heavy scratching on the bottom. The interior is very clean. The lid is hinged and is held shut by a working latch.

The number “31” stamped into one side near the top, above what is like a previous owner’s initials, “J G S”.

Inside the box is a muslin bag for wrapping the helmet. The bag is in excellent condition.  [ad]
