Cap is made entirely of black leather.
The front portion has the “tombstone” shaped panel that his higher than the rest of the cap. Sewn to the front is a reproduction stamped brass shako plate for the 12th US Infantry. Twisted white rope is anchored at right top and left bottom by large lead buttons. Chin strap looks to be of twisted wire and is held by two very small lead side buttons.
Left side has a black leather cockade and a removeable white plume. The bottom edge of the hat has leather edging which comes to a point in the back. Visor is also of black leather and is slightly curled and the edging shows minor wear.
