This is the Model 1881 pressed felt dress helmet complete with horse tail plume and braided red dress cords of the artillery.
The dark pressed felt shell remains in excellent condition. Thin pressed leather band exhibits a few small edge chips as does the leather edging; although both display fine overall. Complete with all original brass pieces. Side “buttons” feature crossed cannons as does the eagle plate on the front. A German silver “2” is fastened upon the central shield of that plate.
On the inside, the thin pressed leather lining the underside of the front and rear brim is mostly gone. The tan leather sweatband remains complete and supple. A small paper size page (6-7/8) is found just above the sweat band on the back.
The braided cords are complete with all tassels, “waffles”, button loop, and sliding loops and hang 5’ front the left side of the helmet. The red color of the plume and cords make this a very attractive piece.
The exterior shows a bit of surface dust from storage but overall the helmet makes for a superb display. [jet] [ph:L]
