Popularized by General McDowell, this pattern of forage was characterized by its tall body and its curved, downturned visor.  The cap is 5 ½” tall; the interior opening measures 7 ¾” in length (front edge of the visor to the back edge) x 6” in width. The exterior shows some slight moth tracking on the crown along with one pencil-eraser sized nip that exposes the lighter colored board lining of the crown, which could be backed by a small matching piece of cloth. On the other hand, it is just a sign of honest age. There are a few nips around the perimeter of the crown, and scattered pencil point size nips overall, a few more on the wearer’s right side than elsewhere, but none really needing any disguise, repair or improvement and we would leave it untouched.

The front of the cap has an artillery officer’s insignia of crossed cannon embroidered on a rectangular patch sewn to the front of the cap. This retains a subdued gilt finish and is typical in quality of officer’s insignia meant for wear in the field. The chinstrap is likewise retained by officer’s eagle-A artillery buttons. The front of the cap has a couple of moth nips low down, but again nothing needing repair. The bound visor shows some unevenness of finish, typical of exposure to the elements. One area over the wearer’s left eye might have been from being placed against a hot surface. The underside shows just some small areas of abrasion or finish loss.

The quilted interior is very good. There is on small tear near the top on the wearer’s left rear, and a slightly wider run below that, closer to the bottom. Both visor and sweatband are securely in place. The sweatband has just one small wear mark in the front, and preserves pretty much all its brownish-red original color.

This cap has a lot of character and is great example of an officer’s cap for wear on campaign and in battle.  [sr][ph:L]
