This is a "bet your life" made in the Southern Confederacy surgeon-major's cap. The upper body of the cap is made of navy-blue wool broadcloth, and the 1 1/4-inch base band is of the same material, but it was originally black and has now oxidized to brown. The front of the cap rises 2 1/2 inches and the back seam extends for 5 3/4" to the crown. The crown is 5 inches in diameter. There is no significant damage from wear or insects. The kepi features 1/8-inch-wide flat gold metallic braid trim of the "flat fall" type. This is all hand tacked in sets of three. There are ribbons of braid in threes forming a quatrefoil on the crown with a single ribbon of braid surrounding this quatrefoil. The kepi band is surrounded by of metallic braid in threes. The front, back and sides have metallic braiding in threes that extend to the crown. In the rear one strand is gone totally and about 1/2 inch of the other 2 are torn off at the crown junction. On both the right and left sides portions of braid have been torn/worn off and gone missing (please refer to our photos). The braiding indicates the rank of Major when it comes to a full Confederate surgeon. When not medical the rank would be compatible with major or colonel. A 1/2-inch-wide leather chinstrap is now only 40% intact. A small brass civilian decorative button holds this firmly in place while the other button is lost as well as 60 % of the right chinstrap.
The interior of the kepi is lined with "Silesia" which is dark brown in color and black originally. The lining gathers at the top sewn around the circumference of the water-proofed (painted) canvas central disc. The 1/8-inch-thick leather visor is black patent leather on top and bottom. It has a hand stitched black canvas binding around the edge. The bill is 2 inches deep and 6 inches across. The painted black canvas sweat band is 1 1/4 inches high it is 100% intact held firmly by all the original hand stitched threads. This sweat band is strong but is flaking from age. Between the sweatband and visor there is a welt of black wool hiding the junction of the cap and the peak.
On the front of the cap is an unbelievably rare Confederate "MS" (Medical Service) badge! It is made using gold bullion embroidered into an oval black woolen patch. It is 2 inches by 1 1/2 inches. The condition is excellent with no loss. This cap is untouched and uncleaned - it has "The look", that is, it beckons with Southern charm.
Genuine Confederate Medical Service headgear is exceedingly rare (most offered and sadly sold as Confederate today are French made and used; buyer be aware!). This, one is the real thing and was on display in Mr. Richey's Texas Civil War Museum for years. [pe][ph:L]
