This captain's cap is almost identical to the forage cap of Captain Wallace, of Gordonsville, Virginia to be found on page 164 in Time-Life's Echoes of Glory. Arms and Equipment of the Confederacy. It may even be made by the same hat maker possibly in Virginia.  That cap and ours have some notable characteristics of the so called late-war Stonewall type cap.

Made from blue-gray kersey the sides are high, but not so high as to allow the crown to fall fully forward onto the visor, the front height being 5 inches rising to 6 inches in the rear. Gold metallic braid does a single strand quatrefoil pattern on the top 5 1/2-inch disc. This has a single circular stand of metallic braid around it. The sides, front, rear and base have double strands of gold metallic braid hand tacked in place. The double strands make this a captain's cap. The exterior of the cap has a few insect nips only. It has a rectangular oil cloth over stiffened cardboard visor that measures 2 1/4 deep and 7 inches across. It is bound with black glazed fabric hand sewn in place. There is a functional two-piece leather chinstrap held by US eagle officer buttons.

The cap is lined top and sides with a black polished cotton, now oxidized to brown and torn in spots but 90% there.  The sweatband is brown leather 1 inch high and 85% intact. The sweat band is hand whipped stitch into place. A roll or welt of navy-blue woolen broadcloth runs between the sweat band and the visor. This is a great example with real eye appeal. It was on display at the Texas Civil War Museum. [pe][ph:L]
