An outstanding and very rare kepi worn by an unidentified captain in the 20th Massachusetts Infantry aka The Harvard Regiment. Please view this link (20th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment in the American Civil War).
This mid-to-late-war cap is made of navy-blue broadcloth on the sides, but the 4 1/4-inch diameter inset crown is covered in white felt! There is minimal insect damage. Around the circumference of the cap are 3 lines of 1/8 inch gold metallic "flat fall" tape, all hand tacked. Where going up the back, front and sides these are in pairs. On the white crown again in pairs, in a quatrefoil pattern, this same flat fall 1/8-inch-wide tape is surrounded by a single band of tape. Most are held fast but some are loose especially in the front. All this is indicative of captain's rank. The cap rises to 3 inches in front. Here, in front, is a badge representing an infantry horn which is made of gold metallic bullion. It measures 3 inches by 1 3/4 inches. Within the horn is the false embroidered metallic number "20". A 1/2-inch functioning chinstrap with small, stamped brass buckle is held in place by 2 Civil War era State of Massachusetts officer's buttons. The leather-bound patent leather peak is 1 1/2 inches deep. Internally there is a 100% intact 1 3/4-inch-high leather sweat band. And the black, now oxidized to brown, adjustable lining is all intact (the draw string is missing). A spectacular piece of headgear once displayed in the R. Richie Texas Civil War Museum. [pe][ph:L]
