This black felt hat comes pretty close in style to the rarely seen "Burnside Pattern". It has a 3-inch-wide brim that has 1 1/4-inch-wide grosgrain wrapped around; of this 85% is worn but intact. The crown rises to 5 1/2 inches and has some holes from wear and age. Around its base is a grosgrain ribbon 1/2 inches high. Both the crown and brim have assorted patched repairs; these are well done and not unsightly. On the front of the crown is a patch of dark brown velvet that measures 4 inches by 3 inches. In the center of this badge is a 2 3/4 inch by 2-inch gold metallic embroidered infantry horn; within this one finds a two-piece brass "15". This is 15th regiment of an unknown state organization. The gold metallic and black silk acorn officer's cords are in place. The right side of the hat is held up by a 3 1/2 by 3-inch black felt badge that within it is a stamped one-piece gilt (only traces of gilt remain) 1858 Hardee Pattern badge. On the interior the original 2 1/2-inch-high patent leather sweat band is held firmly in place, but it has been tacked back by a restorer. There is a patch hiding the seam in the sweat band's rear. The hat has a well-worn period appearance and some restorations but has a great look and may in fact be the elusive "Burnside Pattern". [pe][ph:L]
