This is right out of an attic in Boston Massachusetts! Few 100% untouched Model 1858 high crowned forage caps designated by the original as made eagle "A" buttons have come to light particularly those of the "McDowell Pattern". Popularized by General McDowell, this pattern of forage was characterized by its tall body and its curved, downturned visor.

The wool dark broadcloth cap rises to 5 3/4 inches in the back; in front its rise is 4 inches. The disc on top has a 5-inch diameter. The heavy Patent leather unbound "McDowell" peak is 2 inches deep. The working chin strap held firmly by 2 eagle "A" buttons has a small, stamped brass buckle. The cap is fully lined in black, oxidized to brown, polished cotton. The 100% intact leather sweat band is 1 1/2 inches in height. The overall condition is excellent with a few minor insect losses. The front seam above the bill has some old reenforced stitching. The cap is literally wearable. You will see dozens of Infantry and cavalry enlisted caps before you see one of these artillery versions. [pe] [ph:L]
