This rare piece of headgear just came out of a hidden hoard of militaria in Boston. All the items were collected for decades exclusively within the State of Massachusetts. Our "in house" restorer found it necessary to clean "block" and otherwise stabilize the cap due to years of neglect, but rest assured all components are original to this piece; in particular the chinstrap held by the eagle "R" buttons. It is this compiler's opinion, who is also the restorer, that this cap was worn by a non-commissioned officer or a private but was a state issue or private purchase. This reasoning is based on the clear indications of pinned insignia, now missing, from the cap's top circular disc.
This wool broadcloth high crowned cap is blue/black in color. Its height up the back is 6 1/4 inches, while in front it is 4 inches high. The disc on top is 5 3/4 inches in diameter. The body of the cap has a few minor moth nips at the bottom back and other tiny scattered losses. The Patent leather bill is 2 inches deep and bound with a bead blackened oil cloth; this peak is 7 inches across. The original working 1/2-inch-high Patent leather chin strap has a stamped brass buckle and is held firmly in place its 2 original eagle "R" buttons. The interior is full lined with black, oxidized to brown, polished cotton which is 100% intact on the sides and 95% intact on the quilted top. The thin brown leather sweat band is 1 7/8 inches high. This sadly has suffered from age and is 45% intact. Where in danger of future loss it has now been stabilized. This Rifleman's cap has the look so sought after by the collectors of Civil War headgear is museum worthy. [pe][ph:L]
