This one has a great look of age and righteousness! The cap is based on the US Model 1858 forage cap, later to be known as a "Bummer's Cap".

Made of navy-blue wool broadcloth it is 6 inches high up the back and 3 1/4 inches high in front. The top disc is 5 1/2 inches in diameter. There is scattered insect damage but no tears.  Sewn to the front is a gold bullion laurel wreath that measures 1 1/2 inches across by 1 1/4 inches high including its black cloth backing. Inside the wreath are the silver embroidered letters "US"; tarnished but perfect. There is a 1/2-inch Patent leather chinstrap that is 60% intact with a portion missing. The loose ends are sewn down. This strap is held at their ends by 2 brass eagle officer staff buttons. The Patent leather thick bill or peak is 2 inches in depth, and it is bound on its perimeter. The navy-blue cap has faded/oxidized in several spots almost to a dark brown color, but the effect is pleasing. The interior of the cap is lined in brown once black polished cotton; it is quilted on the top disc. This lining remains 100% intact. The leather sweat band is fully present just over 1 inch high and hand whip-stitched into place.

If you want a field service Civil War cap that "talks to you" this would be that one.  [pe][ph:L]
