This wonderful piece of headgear just came out of a hidden hoard of militaria in Boston. All the items were collected for decades exclusively within the State of Massachusetts. This particular cap of the Model 1858 type was a private purchase possibly worn by an enlisted man but more likely an NCO. What distinguishes this expensively made cap from that of an officer's, besides the enlisted man's eagle button, are the several tiny holes left on the top disc by designating numbers and letters; now all missing. It looks like there were 3 rows of these, perhaps something like "MSM" (Massachusetts State Militia) over a number(s), over a letter(s)?
This wool broadcloth was cap once 100% dark blue over time has oxidized to a butternut color over 70% where exposed to light. Its height up the back is 5 3/4 inches, while in front it is 4 1/2 inches high. The disc on top is 5 3/4 inches in diameter. The body of the cap has several small moth nips, none are unsightly. The Patent leather bill is 2 inches deep and bound with a bead blackened oil cloth; this peak is 7 inches across. 1/2 inch of the original chin strap and a single eagle button remain on the right side. The interior is full lined with black, polished cotton which is 85% intact. The thin black Patent leather sweat band is 1 1 /4 inches high with a cord of white thread running its circumference. It is 65% intact and brittle to the touch; it is hand sewn into place. Our "in house" restorer found it necessary to stabilize the cap due to years of neglect, but rest assured all components are original to this piece. This cap has a great look and would be spectacular with the top adornment letters and numbers restored. [pe] [ph:L]
