This black wool beret from the Saddam Hussein era is fitted with a brass Iraqi eagle cap badge. The eagle is the Eagle of Saladin, the national emblem of Iraq during that period. It’s shown with spread wings and a shield on its chest, standing on a base.
The beret is made in the classic military style, with a leatherette sweatband binding the edge and an adjustment drawstring at the back that’s knotted at the ends. Inside is a black cloth lining, and two metal ventilation eyelets sit on the side.
The Republican Guard started as a palace guard brigade. Under Saddam Hussein it grew into Iraq’s best-trained and best-equipped force, and its divisions became the core of the army during the Iran–Iraq War. In the 1991 Gulf War, Republican Guard divisions like the Tawakalna and Medina fought some of the largest tank battles of the war against U.S. armored forces. The Guard fought again during the 2003 invasion and was formally dissolved by the Coalition Provisional Authority in May 2003. That makes its uniform items a closed chapter, and they’re steadily getting harder to find.
The beret shows honest field use. The wool body is solid and holds its shape. The leatherette edge binding is cracked and flaking all the way around, which is typical for these. The lining has some puckering. The badge is still attached and shows age toning. There is one repair present in the lining. [gh] [ph:L]
