Worn by officers in most of the branches of the United States Army, the waist sash was a common uniform accoutrement and symbol of authority in the military during both field operations and camp duties. The sash, when worn over the frock coat, was wrapped around the waist and looped on the left side. The officer’s leather sword belt was worn over the sash.  While the use of the sash in the field and camp continued after the Civil War period, this piece’s subtle characteristics likely date it to the Mexican War.

This item still exhibits a rich, vibrant maroon color, a tight weave, and is approximately 4” wide by approximately 128” overall (including the tassels). The tassels are 6” long themselves and in excellent condition.  A dime-sized hole is noted at the center of the sash body, along with very minor and scattered snagging that does not detract from the overall presentation or display potential.

This sash is a very nice and uncommonly found example of an essential piece of US Officer kit from an important and formative period in American History.  [cm][ph:L]
