Original circa 1850s militia uniform jacket. This is a gray triple-breasted tail coat with black trim. A single row of staff buttons remains in the center where the functioning button holes are. All of the outer “decorative” rows have been removed as have the buttons on the cuffs and tails.

The body is made of gray wool. The 2 ¼” high collar is of fine black wool. A single brass “hook and eye” remains to close the collar. “Puffy” shoulders where the sleeves are attached are typical of this early manufacture. Brown thread “loops” remain between shoulders and collar to attach some sort of epaulettes. Double rows of thin black ribbon runs between the nine center buttons and where the outer buttons were once placed on each side. There is a 2 ½” wide watch pocket on the left breast.

The back splits into two narrow tails. Two buttons were positioned at the waist even with the split. A vertical four-button ornament (similar to a scalloped pocket flap) is on each tail. The tails themselves are sewn to appear as older-style “buttoned-back” tails. That appearance is achieved by having the black cloth lining from the inside wrap around the sides of the tails.

Sleeves have vertical scalloped black “pocket flap” details at the cuffs. The sleeves are lined in white cotton; the interior body is lined in a green material that is quilted. A well-worn label is in the collar. There is one inside pocket on the left breast.

The coat shows only light wear; most notably on black ribbon around button holes. The linings are in overall very good condition with only one repaired split at middle waist in the back and a 1” tear at junction of tail and left hip area. The outside remains very attractive. There are a few small nips on the bottom of the left tail.
