These buff cloth epaulettes are in very good condition with only light surface dirt from age and storage throughout. There is no damage of any kind.

The body of each is covered in a buff colored cloth with a clamshell that is highlighted by two concentric rows of twisted material, the outer larger and thicker than the inner.

Twisted wool buff tassels with a sewn together bottom edge hang from the clamshell.

The undersides of each epaulette are padded and lined with white muslin. Under each clamshell the lining is faintly stamped “W. H. HORSTMANN & SONS…” in black ink.

Each epaulette has a sewn buttonhole for attaching to a uniform jacket.

It is possible that these epaulettes were once yellow, as prescribed for engineers, and then faded to this buff/cream color over the years. Buff epaulettes were used by men serving on staff or they could also have seen service with militia units.  [ad] [ph:L]
