An excellent condition set of Smith Patent shoulder straps for a Brigadier General. James Smith’s patent used stamped and gilded brass metallic frames to imitate the bullion embroidered borders of conventional shoulders straps, marketing them as less expensive, stronger, and easier to keep clean and polish bright if they became dulled. They were also not susceptible to having bullion strands unwind or catch on things. This is a very strong set, bearing the single five-pointed star of a Brigadier General with the borders and rank insignia bright, and the regulation black velvet centers for a general showing deep, dark color with no moth nips, holes or wear spots.

The frames are stamped to imitate the alternating bands of “dead and bright” bullion on the borders and also the jaceron wire that ran along the inner and outer edges of conventional straps. The faces show just a couple of small spots of thin, light green verdigris on the borders. The stars are false embroidered, die stamped with raised central edges and covered with minute facets to catch the light, and still do from certain angles. The backs are closed, which is standard for Smith straps that often show a red stencil or paper maker’s label. The backs show some soiling, some small moth nips, and typical wear at the corners showing they were actually worn, and have a small, flattened, brass wire loop at each end, that have passed through a small grommet hole on the shoulder of the coat to be secured by a lace on the inside.

This is a great looking set in very strong condition. [sr][ph:L]
