DOUBLE BORDER ARTILLERY COLONEL’S SHOULDER STRAPS

A very nice looking set of Civil War period embroidered bullion artillery Colonel’s shoulder straps. These use a border of two rows of gold bullion embroidery done in alternating groups of “dead and bright” coils that are edged on the exterior and interior with gild jaceron wire. The centers are red velvet and the eagle with spread wings, clutching arrows and an olive branch, is rendered in silver bullion thread with sequins as feathers of the wings to catch the light, with the eagle also given a dark eye. The backs are closed and show some slight wear to the black fabric. The bullion borders show just minor rubbing and dulling to the color along the high points, which is expected, with stronger gilt visible on the lower surfaces and in recesses. We see not moth holes, just minor edge wear.

This is a scarce rank, especially for the branch of service since with the exception of heavy artillery most of the volunteer units during the war were organized at the battery level and the Union army lagged behind the Confederate in grouping them into larger units for administrative and organizational if not always tactical purposes.
