A very good, unused set of infantry captain’s shoulder straps. These retain their black enameled paper backs showing some minor losses, but no indication of having been turned under to sew them to the shoulders of an officer’s coat and are substantially like they were at a military goods shop catering to officers, who had to purchase all their own uniforms, insignia, and gear.

These are regulation in having gold bullion embroidered borders edged with gilt jaceron wire inside and out, and the officer has gone for the shop’s basic offering, using a single row of bullion for the border rather than double, triple or more rows, of the same or differing widths, despite the salesman’s best efforts to up-sell him. The center ground of the straps is a very dark blue velvet, showing no fading, rubs or moth nips. The base fabric is a typical wool or satinette, like the officer’s coat, showing black, with good, full edges, not ragged or clipped. The bullion embroidery has oxidized somewhat, showing as a dull silver mixed with muted gilt. The jaceron wire edging generally shows a tad lighter.

This is a good example of how shoulder straps looked before being mounted on a coat, and would fit a collection of embroidered insignia or representative insignia in an officer’s display. Needless to say, infantry captains were company commanders, deployed in the line of battle in combat. These would look great beside an officer’s sash and a Model 1850 foot officer’s sword.  [sr][ph:L]
