A good set of Civil War embroidered bullion officer’s shoulder straps for a Captain of infantry. As with all officer material they would be privately purchased by the officer from a military goods dealer like Schuyler, Hartley and Graham or one of the many lesser known operations. They are a step up in quality and visual appeal in having borders made of two rows of gilt bullion embroidery, both showing alternating groups of “dead and bright” bullion strands and with the inner and outer edges, and the line between the two rows, delineated by a line of jaceron twisted wire. The rank bars are single row, but also of dead and bright bullion and edged with jaceron wire. The bullion remains bright. The centers are a dark blue velvet showing wear to the nap, particularly at the centers, which would be the high points when worn, and show some slight light brown from the fabric, but no holes.
The backs are open, typical of Civil War straps, showing the underlying web base of the straps and the embroidering thread. These were clearly worn and on a coat for a time and the ragged edges of the dark blue base fabric trimmed to the jaceron wire edges when they were removed, but they show off very well, clearly worn by an officer in the field, but with no unravelling to the bullion, moth holes or graying to the bullion.
Insignia, and embroidered bullion insignia, have both visual and historic appeal. These would fit a specialized collection and display, but also go with one focused on the uniform, weapons, and gear of the basic Union infantry company commander of the Civil War. [sr][ph:L]
