A scarce set of regulation Civil War shoulder straps for a major of infantry, showing wear and use, but complete, and in good condition. With only one major per infantry regiment, any major’s shoulder straps are scarce. This is the regulation pattern with gold embroidered bullion borders, themselves edged inside and out with gold jaceron wire, and gold embroidered bullion oak leaves indicating the wearer was a major placed at each end.
The borders are single row, showing groups of “dead bullion” strands accented by interspersed pairs of “bright bullion” strands. All are in place, as is the jaceron wire edging. We see just one small pull at the inner corner of one strap and to the top of one oak leaf on the other. The bullion has oxidized to mix of muted silver and softened gold tones. The oak leaves show as muted gold with the raised veins showing a slight silver tone, indicating they may have been highlighted. The fabric center show clearly as light blue, indicating infantry, though with the nap somewhat soiled from use and wear spots showing a bit lighter.
The underlying dark blue fabric has been turned under along the edges, leaving the backs open, as is standard on Civil War shoulder straps. A couple of moth nips show along the edge of one strap from above, otherwise they display very well. The backs show some smaller and larger nips, but nothing too egregious, affecting the integrity of the straps, or visible from above.
Shoulder straps showing field use are nice combination of eye-appeal and history. These, as Major’s straps, are also scarce- literally ten times rarer than those of a captain or lieutenant, though like them majors and the other field officers of an infantry regiment served under fire in the front lines of battle and were also true combat officers. These would display well on their own, as part of an officer’s display, insignia collection, or with an 1850 Staff and Field Sword. [sr][ph:L]
