These Civil War infantry captain’s shoulder straps are as new condition as one could ever hope to find. Officers had to purchase their own uniforms, insignia, weapons and gear and these look pretty much as they must have when the salesman laid them out on top of the display case for a newly minted captain of infantry. They preserve excellent, bright color to the gold embroidered bullion borders, rank bars, jaceron wire edging, medium blue velvet centers, and dark blue base fabric. The latter has never even been turned under and stitched down to create the typical open back as we see even on most “mint condition” straps. One strap even shows traces of what is likely the military goods dealer’s pricing or inventory code in pencil on the web back of one strap.
The borders consist of two rows of gold embroidered bullion showing dead and bright stands, the rows angled in different directions to produce a chevon effect. The same technique is used in creating the rank bars with two rows bullion embroidery. The rank bars and inner and outer edges of the borders are edged with jaceron wire that, like the embroidered bullion, is bright. The centers are a rich, medium blue velvet without holes, wear, or stains. The backs show a few loose threads.
This is an extraordinary set of shoulder straps, whose condition would be hard to equal, let alone surpass. We like shoulder straps showing wear, use and character, but have to admire the outstanding eye appeal offered by this pair. If you are collecting for condition or just want to show how embroidered bullion insignia could look before seeing any use, this pair is for you. [sr][ph:L]
