Here is a fine pair of well-made, Civil War gold dress epaulettes circa 1850s to 1870s. In beautiful original condition, he epaulettes measure 8” long and fit the curve of the shoulder. The flat topside of the epaulette is set with a large, solid brass crescent-shaped device edged with a thin, double-jacquard border of spun gold bullion. A similar roll of decorative gold bullion rope is attached to the outer edge of the epaulette. Centered in the crescent of the epaulette is a single, large cloth and gold combination bullion five-pointed star indicative of an Admiral’s rank device. Suspended from each strap’s edge roll is a fine, tassel fringe of spun, bright gold bullion, with each tassel ½” in diameter and 3” long.  Tassels are very fine with a total of three or four tassels shows fraying.

Underside of each epaulette strap reveals blue colored silk together with a piece black leather glued under the hinged brass attachment device.    Each leather piece is stamped with the maker’s mark in gold paint and reads “JOSH STARKEY / 23 CONDUIT ST / BOND ST / LONDON. W.”. Top flat of each strap has a small cuff-size, Naval eagle button device that connects the strap to the uniform. Stamped on the reverse side of the attachment devices are the words RIGHT or LEFT and denotes the epaulette as attached to the officer’s uniform at the shoulders.

The original, two-piece, japanned case features a hinged lid and fitted base lined completely in red velvet.  Case measures 9” long x 6” wide x 5” deep.   Constructed in an rectangular form, the box strong and intact, Top lid exhibits a name scratched on the surface that reads “ALBERT L. CIHONLL” (?).  Surface exhibits a mottled salt and pepper coloring on the lid.  This pair of naval officer’s gold epaulettes makes a fine addition to any collection of Civil War naval cloth or an officer’s rank display.
