Infantry colonels were combat officers, commanding their regiments from the front lines and with only one colonel to thirty line officers in a regiment, their shoulder straps are hard to find. This is a single example, constructed with a sky blue wool ground showing a spread-winged U.S. eagle indicating a full Colonel in embroidered bullion and sequins. This is a better quality strap with the border using two rows of bullion embroidery of equal width. See No. 106 in the Schuyler, Hartley & Graham 1864 catalog for a similar lieutenant’s straps. In addition, the rows use alternating groups of five and dead bright bullion strands and set them at a different angle in each row with the two rows thus also forming chevrons.

The condition is very good. We see just one very small moth nip to the light blue ground under the eagle’s wing at right. The jaceron wire edges are in place and tight along both edges of the border. The borders themselves show as medium bright with just the slightest hint of tarnish and only one or two very small dark spots. The silver bullion and sequins of the eagle show as a muted silver gray and white, with some darker areas on the shoulder of the eagle’s wing at left and the shield on its chest, but embroidery preserves the dark eye and red tip of the tongue. The base fabric is the same as the ground and turned under on the back, fairly wide, but still giving a glance at the web underlay as is typical. Please see our photos.

Bullion embroidered rank insignia is great combination of eye appeal and history.    [sr][ph:m/L]
