Civil War brigadier generals were not relegated to background positions, but held field commands, leading brigades, usually four or five regiments, under fire, with a commensurate mortality rate. This set is in very good condition and fully regulation, each strap using a silver embroidered bullion five-pointed star on a black velvet ground- the regulation rank insignia for a brigadier general and the regulation background color for general officers serving in all branches of the army.

These straps retain the deep black color of the velvet centers and the bright color to the gold jaceron wire running along the inner and outer edges of the borders. The borders use a single row of embroidered bullion, but as an extra, elegant touch they were made with the closed backs, rather than the open backs exposing the web underlay as is common on straps for lower ranking officers. There are no holes or pulls on the faces. The only wear spots are on the backs, with a small spot of moth tracking on one strap and a small moth nip, showing the web underlay and threads on the other strap. On the faces, the stars even retain the bullion coil ties that extend up and over the stars between their points, giving the illusion of tying them in place. The borders of both straps show largely as silver, but there are scattered small spots showing a thin gold indicating gold bullion embroidered borders have oxidized over time to the silver, which is, nevertheless, fairly uniform and visually pleasing.  [sr][ph:m/L]
