Smith received a patent on June 18, 1861 for a metallic false embroidered strap. These straps are 1 ½ inches wide and 4 inches in length. The false embroider border is ¼ inch wide with an inner and outer jaceron boarder. Each grade device is attached separately. The blue velvet field is slightly faded. The underlay of each features pasted labels reading “J A S. S. SMITH / PATENT / JUNE 18, 1861 / 15 DUTCH STREET / NEW YORK”. One strap retains all 4 japanned attachment hooks, while the other is missing 1 hook and shows a spot of hot glue holding another in place.
All things considered, this is a fine and mostly complete set of Civil War shoulder insignia - perfect for display or rounding out a collection. [cm][ph:L]
