Standard issue dark blue wool shell jacket with yellow piping on collar and cuffs with yellow trim down the front and along the edges. Jacket has 12 General Service eagle cuff buttons down the front and most of the original buttons have been resewn. Two buttons on each side of the collar and two at each functional cuff. Buttons have mixed back marks. Corresponding button holes show light wear.

The exterior blue wool body material of the jacket is in good condition. There are no signs of wear or dirt and no serious moth action can be detected. Back center has both pillows. The piping and trim retain their yellow color. Collar is missing hook and eye closures.

Interior is lined with a light shade of jean cloth material and has a pocket in the left breast. Sleeves are lined with white muslin. Right upper sleeve interior is stenciled with size, “2” and a nice inspector’s stamp from Cincinnati, Ohio. The opposite sleeve has what appears to be a reenactor’s name marked. Lining material is likewise in good condition.

The coat was possible worn by a reenactor and in so doing split many of the seams, inside and out. The original parts have been neatly, but unprofessionally resewn.

This jacket is a legit example of a Civil War Cavalry shell jacket. From the Texas Civil War Museum collection.   [jet][ph:L]
