These trousers comport with Article 51, Section 1468 of the US Army 1861 Uniform Regulations: “For General Officers and Officers of the Ordnance Department – dark blue cloth, plain, without stripe, welt, or cord down the outer seam.” This pair is unidentified, so there is no way of telling which of those two sets of officers wore them, but either would be scarce, and these are in exceptional condition. The trousers are naturally cut full, as was the fashion. They show no moth damage, are solid and have strong color with no fading or stains.
They are made with a 1-1/2” wide waistband that tapers slightly to 1” at the rear center where there is a 1-3/4” V-notch closed by a short, two-piece cloth belt with black-enameled two-pronged buckle to adjust the fit and is fitted with 6 suspender buttons on the waistband made of black enameled stamped tin, 11/16” diam.- two on each side, corresponding to the upper points of the pockets and one either side of the V-notch at the rear, about 2-1/2” from the split. The fly is closed by five buttons, black enameled tin, 5/8” diam. The top of the fly is secure by a 5/8” bone button at top, inside the waistband, and the waistband itself is closed by a smaller, ½” black enameled tin button.
The waistband is lined in an off-white material that extends down about 2” at the front, beginning next to each pocket widens gradually to 4” at the V-notch at the rear, and has a pinked edge along the bottom. The only other lining is in the bottom of the seat: a 3” by 4” triangular white lining sewn at top to either side of the center seam.
There are three pockets- one large, tabbed pocket on each side, with horizontal opening starting about 3-1/2” from the fly and ending at the side seam where a ½” black enameled tin button closes a 2-1/2” side opening. A small watch pocket, 3” wide is set in the upper edge of the waist band on the right, with curved horizontal opening. All pocket bags are a white cotton and intact.
The cuffs are turned under for about ¾” over the bottom edge of 2” wide buckram lining that reinforces the cuff and helps secure a ½” brown bone or composite button on either side that would have secured an instep strap to keep the cuff secured over the boot or shoe.
The condition is excellent. There is some restitching along the lower edge of the waistband lining, an old mend to a 1-1/2” vertical tear on the left edge of the right pocket at top, and a single dark to close a ½” open seam on the lower edge of the waistband just below the suspender button closest to the fly. None of these are very noticeable nor do they affect the structural integrity of the trousers. Any type of Civil War trousers are scarce and these would make a great combination with the appropriate officer’s coat. [sr][ph:L]
