These trousers are likely a private purchase or state issue, following somewhat the 1884 US pattern in the renewed use of side-seam pockets, and the slightly darker shade of sky-blue introduced about 1885, but having two hip pockets instead of the one (introduced in 1882.) They are fitted with six suspender buttons, blackened tin, one inward facing waist button and four slightly smaller fly buttons. The waistband is a full 2” at the front, tapering to 1-3/8” at the rear vent, which is 3” and closed by a two-piece cloth adjusting belt fitted with blackened frame buckle with “*PARIS* marking. There is no watch pocket. A striped lining about 6” deep extends down from the top of the waistband and overlaps a plain white lining about 5” deep coming down from the lower edge of the waistband. The pocket bags are a slightly heavier brown fabric. All pocket bags and linings along in place, though about striped lining is missing a torn section about 6” long on the wearer’s right. The only moth damage we see are three or four small nips on each cuff. These were turned under for 3 or 3-1/4” inches and both bites appear roughly along that line. The stitching holding the cuffs was removed at some point, so the end of the legs now show as raw edges unless tucked back into place, as they easily could be for display. [sr][ph:L]
