This regulation Civil War Union infantry 2nd Lieutenants frock coat is in excellent condition, with strong color, virtually no moth damage, and carries a beautiful set of embroidered bullion shoulder straps with blue velvet centers. The coat is fully regulation, with standing collar a little over 1” tall at the front and 1-1/2” at the center rear. The collar’s lower front was likely closed by a small wire hook and eye that are now missing. All nine large Eagle-I infantry officer’s buttons are in place on the front, with four more at the rear waist and bottom of the tail pocket openings in the skirts on either side of the vent. The cuffs are functional and each closed by three small Eagle-I buttons. Two of the lapel buttons show resewing (4th from the top and 9th) as do the two on the bottoms of the skirt pocket openings, which are natural point of wear when sitting, etc.  All, large and small, appear to have Scovill MF’G Co / Waterbury backmarks. The sleeves have a good 9” width at the elbow and the cuffs are 5-1/2” at the opening. The pocket bags in the tails are intact.

The interior has the usual green polished cloth lining, with a hanging loop at the base of the collar and is loosely quilted in the sides and shoulders. The sleeve linings are white, and intact. We see two very small wear spots on the lining at the right armpit. Seams joining the sleeve and body linings are intact and tight. It is fitted with two interior pockets- one in the upper left breast and the other in the lower right. The pocket bags of both are intact.

The shoulder straps are in excellent condition and particularly attractive. They have single row borders of gold bullion embroidery with two rows of bright bullion alternating with five rows of dead bullion, all with lots of gilt remaining that provides a bit of sparkle right light. The velvet centers have an excellent nap and color, something a bit closer to royal blue perhaps than navy, extremely good looking and well within the acceptable range for infantry officers. They are securely in place and the gilt jaceron wire along their inside and outside edges is intact and in place.

This is in excellent condition, displays like gangbusters, and still shows some sign it was used in the slight wear evident to the buttonholes. You’d have to look long and hard for one as nice.   [sr] [ph:L]
