Standard issue dark blue wool shell jacket with red piping that was shortened!

Features red trim on collar and cuffs with red trim down the front and along the edges. Jacket has only 10 General Service eagle buttons down the front instead of the usual 12, having been shortened. There are two buttons on each side of the collar and two at the cuffs. All of the buttons appear original to the coat and have matching, blank back marks.

The body of the jacket is in overall good condition. There are a few signs of wear, dirt, and especially arm pit sweat. No visible moth holes or tracks. Back center is missing both pillows which were removed when shortened. Cuffs also show evidence of the alteration as the cuffs were rolled under and stitched down, leaving one button hole on outside and the other still visible on the inside of the sleeve. The piping and trim retain their original red color. Collar has one of the original hook and eyes. A few split and/or restitched seams in expected areas: collar, shoulders, arm pits.

Interior is lined with a tan/gray wool material. White muslin lined pocket in the left breast. Sleeves are lined with white muslin. Right upper sleeve interior is stenciled with portion of oval inspector’s stencil. Arm pits are stained from red shirt.

This jacket is a perfectly displayable example of a Civil War Artillery shell jacket.   [jet][ph:L]
