Standard issue dark blue wool shell jacket with bright red piping on collar, cuffs, and with red trim down the front and along the edges. Jacket has 12 General Service eagle buttons down the front with two buttons on each side of the collar and two at each functional cuff. All of the buttons appear to have no back marks. Corresponding button holes show no wear.
The body of the jacket is in excellent condition. There are no signs of wear or dirt and no moth action of any kind can be observed. Back center has both pillows. The piping and trim retain their original bright red color with no loose stitching. All exterior seams are tight. Collar has no hook and eye closures.
Interior is lined with a wool blend material and features a wide-spaced quilt stitch going back and forth to hold the lining in place. A pocket is in the left breast. The only area showing any splitting is around the sleeves and arm pits. Sleeves are lined with white muslin and are unmarked. Sleeves appear to have been restitched in place and a small gusset was added in the right sleeve.
This jacket is a very nice example of a Civil War Artillery shell jacket. [jet][ph:L]
