This Infantry officer's frock coat is a private purchase with a nine-button front, three-button cuffs, and four buttons on the rear waist; it was the pattern officially adopted in 1858. The dark blue frock coat in front has a single row of 9 State of Vermont (state seal) officer quality "RMDC" (Raised Mark Depressed Channel) gilt buttons made by "SCOVILL MFG. CO. WATERBURY". The material used to tailor this uniform is a blue/black wool broadcloth. The sleeves bulge to 8 1/4 inches at the elbow and are 5 1/4 inches at the non-functional 3 button cuffs which have a total of 5 state seal Vermont buttons (one is missing). The un-piped blue/black stand-up collar is 1 inch high at the front and rear. The coat has a bottom that is raw cut or unbasted. There are 2 rear pockets lined in a brown colored polished cotton. The pocket flaps are decorated with Vermont state seal buttons all with identical back marks as the buttons on the front of the frock. The exterior of the frock is excellent with a few moth nips.
The interior of the frock is fully lined with a quilted green/black polished cotton. There is one interior breast pocket on the left lined with polished brown cotton. The sleeves are fully lined in off-white polished cotton. The officer has had a 5 inch by 2 1/2-inch Moroccan leather re-enforcement placed on the interior left side over 3 of the hand whipstitched buttonholes; this is at the point where the sword belt would wear the uniform. The condition of the lining is excellent, showing minor wear and a couple of tears. Sewn to the shoulders are two good condition Infantry captain's shoulder boards. These are embroidered in metallic gold bullion with 2 exterior borders and 4 pipes or bars on a mid-blue velvet backing. They measure 1 1/2 inches by 3 3/4 inches, they show minor holes and some metallic elements are loose and a couple missing. The coat shows moderate field wear has some moth nips here and there none of these is large.
This is a fine-looking frock coat of the type typically worn by field grade Union officers. [pe] [ph:L]
