Struck in white metal the medallion meas. approx. 2.00 inches across.
The obverse has a right facing classical style bust of Jackson in raised relief surrounded by “LIEUT. GENERAL T. J. JACKSON STONEWALL – BORN 1821 DIED 1863.” At bottom center in very small lettering are the initials of the French engraver.
The bottom of the reverse bears the motto “DEO VINDICE in a shield supporting a wreath of tobacco and corn leaves with a small trophy of arms at bottom center. A riband intertwined with the leaves lists Jackson’s battles with the balance being listed at center of the wreath.
The medal does have some errors. General Jackson was born in 1824 not 1821 and some of the battles on the reverse are misnamed, for instance, Chancellorsville is listed as “THE WILDERNESS” and Bull Run is listed twice, once as “BULL RUN” and once as “SUDLEY.”
These Jackson Memorial Medals were funded by subscription and were meant to be distributed to members of the Stonewall Brigade. Struck by the French, they were brought in through the blockade but became lost until found in the Savannah Customs House in 1894. At that time the medallions were turned over to the Ladies Auxiliary of the United Confederate Veterans for distribution.
Medal comes in a modern wooden frame painted gold with a gold mat. Frame meas. approx. 11.00 x 9.25 inches. The medal is framed with glass on both side so the obverse and reverse can be seen. Also framed with the item is a period lithograph CDV of Jackson in Confederate uniform.
A rare item with an interesting history in excellent condition framed and ready to hang on the wall. [ad] [ph:L]
