Well-worn white ribbon with black lettering that reads “45^TH TENNESSEE INFANTRY CO. I.”

Ribbon is approx. 9.00 inches long x 2.00 inches wide with a small square of lace attached to one end. The end opposite the lace is frayed and slightly stained. Ribbon is also dirty.

A small modern printed tag on the reverse of the plastic sleeve which houses the ribbon reads “REUNION RIBBONS, SAMUEL KERR, 45^TH TENN. INF. WHOSE FAYETTEVILLE BAYONET/PHOTO I HAVE.”

Samuel H. Kerr was 19 years old when he enlisted as a private in Captain Addison Mitchell’s Company of the 45^th Tennessee Volunteers on November 28, 1861. Mitchell’s Company later became Company C of the 45^th Tennessee.

Records at the National Archives show that from May 1 to September 1, 1862, Kerr was sick in Tennessee but that he returned to his regiment sometime in September and was transferred to Company I. He was wounded slightly in the thigh at Murfreesboro on January 2, 1863 and was given leave to recover. By March he had recovered enough to be placed on detached service but the record does not say where.

Kerr is listed as a deserter on September 7, 1863 and there his record ends.

From the records it looks like Kerr was present for Shiloh and Murfreesboro before he deserted.    [ad] [ph:L]
