This silver star shaped pin is engraved “12” and “Co B” in the center. The star was used as the corps badge for the 12th Army Corps in the Army of the Potomac and then adopted by the amalgamated 11th and 12th Corps after their move to the west in Fall 1863 and eventual redesignation as the 20th Corps. While it is possible the “12” is a regimental designation meant to go with the Company B engraving, it is more likely meant to reinforce the star as a Corps Badge rather than a purely patriotic emblem, and perhaps emphasize the veteran’s pride in earlier service with the 12th before its move west. It was certainly meant to be a badge of honor for wear on a lapel or breast pocket.

The badge shows some natural age tarnish and a slight bend to the pin.  [sr] [ph:L]
