A piece of “black silk ribbon or trim used in the funeral obsequies of Abraham Lincoln.” This measures about 1” x ¼” and was part of a longer two pieces sold in the Railsplitter Auction #8, 2003, lot 932, along with two other lots from an unnamed “old Lincoln collection.” This portion has been nicely mounted with a copy of the famous 1864 photograph of Lincoln and Tad looking at a photograph album taken in the Brady gallery in Washington. Below the silk fragment is printed: “Lincoln Funeral Relic. Genuine piece of mourning ribbon; used during the burial services in Springfield, Illinois (1865.)” The auction listing is less specific on which of the funeral obsequies this came from, and shows it to be from a portion of black drapery used on the occasion rather than an individual mourning ribbon. Still, a legitimate memento of the period of national mourning after Lincoln’s death and the ceremonies held as his funeral train made its way to Springfield for his interment. [sr][ph:L]
