One hundred and eighty-nine Union veterans from The Lincoln GAR Post of Newark, New Jersey boarded a train in October 1883 heading for Richmond where they would attend a banquet with their former enemies in the Civil War.  They notably became a supporting wing of The Richmond Society, a collection of Union and Confederate veterans who began meeting socially in extended humanity to former enemies.  In 1884, members of the post raised over $1,000 for Confederate veterans suffering financial hardship.

This ribbon badge was worn and intended to commemorate the post encampment at Pen Mar and Gettysburg from September 23-25, 1895.  There is virtually no damage or wear, with only light surface dirt on the reverse of the light-colored ribbon.  The banner pin features a proud, shaped “LINCOLN POST.” Heading, and matches the portrait of Lincoln on double-sided celluloid drop pin at bottom (the image of a GAR badge and text are on the reverse). The bulk of the ribbon is a cream color with Azure Blue borders on either side.  Gold text is accented by two crossed American flags, both stitched to the ribbon in a ruffled pattern. The top fold of the ribbon over the ribbon bar is marked “THE WHITEHEAD & HOAG CO NEWARK, NJ” in gold text. Overall measurements are 7.25” x 2.6”.

An excellent veteran item from an interesting and important Grand Army of the Republic Post.  Sure to be a feature among any collection of pieces from the men and families who continued to live with the heavy legacy of participating in the Civil War.  [cm][ph:L]
