Shield shaped brass badge that meas. approx. 1.25 x 1.25 inches with a “T” bar pin on back. The catch and bar are in good shape though there is a slight bend in the pin.

The face of the badge has a very small bust view tintype of General Gilmore at center which is surrounded by 13 five pointed stars. This is all surmounted by the Scales of Justice flanked by the dates “1862-1863.”  Continuing clockwise around the photo there are a seated Columbia, a closed book, crossed swords, a scroll and an open book. All around the edges of the badge are lists of General Gilmore’s successes. Beginning at top center and moving clockwise they read:

PULASKI APRIL 11, 1862

SOMERSET KY M.CH 30, 1863

SWAMP ANGEL OPENED ON CHARLESTON AUGUST 23, 1863

EVACUATION OF MORRIS ISLAND SEPTEMBER 7, 1863

FOLLY ISLAND JULY 10, 1863

The face of the badge is clean and bright and in excellent condition overall. [ad] [ph:L]
