Rob Roy Converse served in Company I of the 40th Pennsylvania from September of 1861 through April of 1865, when he transferred to the 190th Pennsylvania to muster out on June 28th, 1865. This pin was a memorial piece for an official event, as he passed away in 1915.
This badge is in a nice condition, with bronze banner pin and drop. The pin features a cross, texturing, and solid border. A blue ribbon is attached and gold text at center reads “JULY 1917”. The drop medallion is in the shape of a Maltese cross, with the upper three sections marked “MONROE CO. CIVIL WAR VETERANS ASSN.” At the center of the medallion is a photograph of Rob in his older age with what appears to be a celluloid coating or a related type of protective layer. The medal’s reverse is stamped “BASTIAN BROS. CO. ROCHESTER N. Y.” No overt wear or damage are noted. An older piece of heavy cardstock accompanies the medal, with ink text reading “ROB ROY CONVERSE D.D. 1917”. Overall measurements are 1.9” x 4.2”.
A very interesting and uncommon type of Civil War veteran item. [cm] [ph:L]
