The height of the souvenir spoon movement occurred between 25 and 40 years (about one generation) after the end of the Civil War. By this time, many had worked to put the horrors of their experiences behind them to some extent and the public took an academic interest in the conflict.  As veterans and civilians flocked to newly established battlefield parks, efforts were made to create souvenirs that commemorated notable sites and events – such as this spoon.

Featured in the bowl is the Snodgrass House of Chickamauga, part of the farm where General Thomas (The Rock of Chickamauga) put up a stubborn defense that stopped the 2nd bloodiest battle of the war from becoming a full US route. Text reads “Chickamauga & Chattanooga MILITARY NAT. PARK/SNODGRASS HOUSE”.  A stylized infantryman in an overcoat forms the tip of the handle, standing over a patriotic shield and floral pattern. The reverse shows a rear view of the man, standing over a shield stamped “U.S.A.”  5.75” in total length and no stampings or other text are noted.

A neat souvenir from the early period of memorialization and memory.  [cm][ph:L]
